Friday Fill-In #36

And...here we go!

1. It's cold and it's meant to be warm by now! Stupid England, haven't you heard of summer?!

2. Pretty much any of my favourite dishes or sauces are based on tomatoes.

3. My favorite health and beauty product is Bio oil or something similar. I like natural or simple stuff - aloe vera gel, oil-free facial moisturiser, Jergens body lotion, Blistex medicated lip balm and Freederm gel. Oh, and anti-frizz serum for my hair!

4. If I could drive, I would take a nice long ride to the coast, a solo road trip, for some R&R.

5. Well, first of all, if you take care of your character, your reputation will take care of itself.

6. Me, my pastor, lots of people on a train, a teenage mugger wearing a balaclava, a young girl, Shortlist magazine, my Mum and various other randoms; those were the cast of characters in a recent dream and it was extremely baffling, random and rather disconcerting, to say the least.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to leaving work, tomorrow my plans include attending International Day at church (which includes an international pot luck...yum) and Sunday, I want to try to avoid that Sunday feeling for as much of the day as possible!

Another Year, Just Another Day

A while back, the Mrs had suggested I do something for my birthday. I wasn't all that keen to be honest, especially since the date was a couple of months away, but the more we talked about it, the more it sounded like a fun idea. We threw ideas back and forth, but the closer the day came, the more I realised the less I wanted to celebrate. This was partly because money is currently tight, but also because my mind state of late wasn't really conducive to a fun time. I decided to take the day off work and had no plans to see anyone or do anything special, other than get my hair cut by my lovely, reliable hairdresser (not my Mum this time).

I went to work yesterday and was greeted almost as soon as I got in to the office with a card and pressie from Miss T. I had a meeting after lunch and when I returned, I found a card on my desk with my name address written in handwriting I recognised - my Aussie Mrs! In my excitement I opened the envelope, without it clicking that it was a birthday card. I quickly realised and saved it to be looked at later. Then, near the end of the day, by boss came out of her last of back-to-back meetings all day with another gift and present. I was really pleasantly surprised that they were all so thoughtful. To be honest, the presents were almost immaterial; I was pleased enough that anyone had been thoughtful enough to get me something.

When I arrived home, I felt absolutely shattered. I chilled out at home and randomly got caught up at about midnight playing a game called 'Honeycomb Expansion' (don't ask, lol) online. Fast forward to 3am and I am goggle-eyed, starting to fall asleep and nursing the beginnings of a throbbing headache. I decide I shouldn't really see in another year of my life in this state and go to sleep, waking 6 hours later, not quite as goggle-eyed but still with the headache.

My haircut was booked for 12.30, a birthday present courtesy of Big Sis, so I spend the morning pottering. I have some breakfast, talk to Bro-in-Law who has a dentist appointment in the afternoon, listen to some music and have a nice soak in the bath. It was lovely and sunny out and despite the headache (which I took care of with a small dose of painkillers), I was actually feeling good and kind of content. I had my mini stash of birthday cards but delayed opening them until later. I checked my emails and had a lovely birthday greeting from a dear friend (hi, KM!). When I got out of the bath a little later, I had missed calls and voice mails from the Mrs, and another close friend, whom I have very little contact with despite our fondness for each other. She started her message with, "You may not remember me, but I thought I'd reintroduce myself..." I giggled at our lack of contact and the fact that despite this, we still consider each other to be a good friend and never feel hard done by that the other hasn't called. I got texts throughout the morning from other friends, sending their wishes for an enjoyable day.

I got ready, still listening to songs and singing along, put on an outfit I really liked and spent a teeny bit more time than usual on making myself look presentable. I got to the salon in good time, nearly fell asleep as the girl washed my hair and massaged my head (I would pay just for that alone, it's the most enjoyable part) and got my hair cut exactly as I like it. I left feeling much lighter and like I had stepped out of Dynasty; my hair felt unnaturally bouffant, probably because I rarely style or blowdry it. I took my coat to the drycleaners to be altered (sleeves too long), went to buy some fabric dye to make a cute cropped blazer I have just bought dark grey (instead of checked cream and grey) and almost skipped home in the sunshine.

When I got home, I noticed another call I had missed while at my hair appointment. My Mrs in Oz had called! She left a message wishing me a lovely day and telling me to send her an email when I get a chance. It was so nice to hear from her and was so sweet of her to call. I've really missed that girl, she's an utter gem and I can't wait to visit her Down Under some time soon. Bro-in-Law had gone to his appointment, so I took advantage of the empty house and recorded myself singing a couple of songs (one by request from the Mrs) and sat down to open my cards and presents (which included an extra one that arrived just after I got home). I got some yummy-sounding bath goodies from Miss T and a book of cupcake recipes from my boss (cupcake porn!), which were really lovely. My Aussie Mrs had also sent a lovely card (also with cupcakes on), wishing me lots of wonderful stuff and updating me on how things are going for her back home. Big Sis and Bro-in-Law gave me a cute little card with lovely messages from both and my Auntie Betty (my Dad's only sister) also sent one, which was the first to arrive as always (she is so good at remembering everyon'e birthdays). Bigger Sis sent the following fabulous card:

I burst out laughing. I can always count of Bigger Sis for an antidote to cheesy emotion. :o)

I got my stuff ready to take to the rents' for the weekend (clothes, toiletries, laptop) and did some long-overdue washing up. By the time Bro-in-Law got home, I was almost ready to leave and still hadn't eaten lunch. Not wanting to delay any longer, I left for the rents', hoping to just avoid the rush hour masses. I arrived at the rents' feeling famished, but was revived by the cup of tea waiting for me on the table. Also on the table was a birthday card, a small present (a nice china mug for the perfect cup of tea) and a lovely iced chocolate cake decorated with a purple ribbon, complete with a single candle.

We had a quiet but filling dinner, so much so that I couldn't even manage a slice of birthday cake, but was compelled to cut it anyway by Dad, who insisted that one's birthday must be cut on one's actual birthday. Mum didn't break with her usual tradition and insisted on marking this pointless exercise (lol) with her paparazzi-like photograph-taking. We talked, laughed, chilled and then eventually went to sleep after a relaxing evening. It was one of those days where I didn't really do anything, but I felt more content that I have done for a while.

I am truly thankful to God for another year, another chance to make more progress and get things right, another year to get a little further on the path to contentment and achievement, another year to experience life and love, challenges and rewards and everything in between. I am also thankful for one day a year that reminds me exactly how many fantastic people I know and am blessed to have in my life. All I hope for next year is a little more of the same.

Friday Fill-In #35

And...here we go!

1. Moving ever forward, onward and upward onto bigger and better things.

2. I may not have much, but I have the most important things in life that are free.

3. My best quality is best decided by someone objective (i.e. not me)! :o)

4. I like to have all the info, but since I'm a little neurotic at times, sometimes it's best to spare all the gory details.

5. In nearly 10 years, I had zero contact with someone I had great fondness for. But now we're back in touch and I'm really pleased about that.

6. A big birthday cupcake is what I need right now!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to dinner at the 'rents (I'm hoping my Dad made cake), tomorrow my plans include seeing the church fam, then having lunch with some good friends and Sunday, I want to enjoy the lunch Bigger Sis is coming over to prepare (um...are all these events food-related? Um...yuh)!

Peaks and Troughs

I've fallen into a slump again. 6 months ago, after months of feeling emotionally turbulent and unsettled, I woke up one morning and burst into tears. I had the clichéd 'epiphany,' called my best friend and said "I think I'm depressed." I knew I wasn't just having a bad day, or reacting in a normal way to a stressful or traumatic event. It had been ongoing, with lots of contributing factors, but no specific 'cause' for months. I never felt settled or content, or happy, really. I started feeling worse because I thought that any problems I had weren't significant enough to be that upset about. Why couldn't I just get on with things? Why couldn't I just be positive and look on the sunny side of life, the way people tell you to? Why did I think so deeply about everything and take things to heart, rather than be able to shrug off the little things? Why couldn't I just be happy, when I have lots to be grateful for? I couldn't answer any of the questions. All I knew was I just couldn't do what I knew I needed to, or feel the way I wanted to feel.

I had a tearful chat with my girl. She helped me to calm down and get a little perspective, reassured me and gave me some helpful advice. I ended up going to see my doctor. I thought my unsettled and rather stressful work situation was the main problem. My doctor suggested counselling. I had a few sessions and found it quite helpful. Funnily enough, the stresses at work hardly came up in conversation, but loads of relationship and emotional issues did. I can't even remember for sure how much of it came out in the actual counselling sessions, but most of it carried on inside my head in between sessions, as I gradually came to realisation after realisation about some of the situations I have chosen to be and stay in. I learned quite a lot about myself and felt like I'd made some progress. At the end of the year, my counsellor told me he wouldn't be offering any counselling sessions after January, as he was taking on additional responsibilities elsewhere. I only had a couple of sessions of my allocated 6 left. When January came, everything went wrong with the Boy and I couldn't face going back.

Reflecting on 2009 up till now, it has only just occurred to me that I still have so far to go. I thought I had overcome a few of my personal demons, but I don't think anything was completely resolved. I'm back where I was 6 months ago, feeling extremely low and only just coping, but second time around it's at least slightly less of a shock. I've fought the urge to stay away from work, as I know that being alone at home with too much time to think probably won't help. But the feeling of instability, of being close to tears and never knowing what might set it off, isn't a nice one to have in a professional environment. When me and the Boy were arguing and ended up breaking up, he told me that I kept being in funny moods and he never knew what he was going to get from day to day. I understand it now. The problem is, I don't know what I'm going to get either, it's not as if I choose my mood in the morning, the way I choose my outfit. "I know, today I shall be withdrawn and easily irritated. Ooh, and I'll wear my grey dress to go with that." It doesn't work that way. I wish I could just 'be' a certain way, but if I could do that, I wouldn't have this problem. Being told he found it 'exhausting' certainly didn't help. I don't doubt it was, but the last thing you want to hear from someone you love and who allegedly loves you is that you are a burden on them, that you are wearing them down. I don't want to be that to anyone and perhaps that realisation was a catalyst for the break-up.

I'm blessed with some supportive friends that have been really good to me and have always been at the end of the phone, or have emailed me while at work to help keep me sane. My friendships have suffered because at times I've found when I'm feeling particularly stressed or down, I'm unable to be particularly supportive back. I hadn't realised that all I had done was held things at bay for a little while, so that the immediate problems subsided. But they have resurfaced all over again. My recent friendship with my Blast From The Past (herein referred to as BFTP) has been a tonic of sorts, but after discovering his own recent difficult experience of his sister's depression, I am conscious that I don't want to add any other emotional stress to his already hectic existence. It's an awkward feeling, wanting to reach out and open up, but feeling scared and reluctant to be considered 'exhausting' by those you open up to.

I met a friend at church at the weekend that I hadn't seen in a good while. We don't know each other particularly well, but he's a lovely guy and very genuine. On New Year's Eve, I received a voice mail from him in which he prayed for me over the phone, that God would keep me safe and guide and bless me throughout 2009. It was a really lovely thing to receive at a difficult time. He came to talk to me, we hugged and exchanged the usual pleasantries. He asked how I was and I said "I'm OK." His reply was "Are you sure?" I assured him I was. He hesitated, before saying somewhat reluctantly, "You…you seem to have lost some weight…?" It's funny, because we have a family joke about people rudely pointing out weight increases and decreases almost as a greeting (all sadly based on personal experience). But the way he said it was really sweet; he seemed rather concerned. I explained that I think I have unintentionally lost a bit of weight recently and haven't been looking after myself. He still seemed concerned. "Oh right. But you're OK, though?" I assured him I was and his concern was appeased. To be honest, it was nice just being asked how I was, by someone who actually wanted to know the answer.

My birthday is coming up and sadly I don't feel much like celebrating. Aside from feeling a little devoid of happiness and rather numb, I just don't have any spare cash to do anything fancy. I've booked the day off work, which is always a good start. I have a 4-day weekend to look forward to, at least. I've decided to postpone celebrations until later in the year, when I'm in a better frame of mind and a better frame of pocket. If I'm not feeling more capable of life in a week's time, then I'm going back to my doctor. I'm tired of feeling emotionally unstable and mostly I'm just tired. For all you praying folk out there, if you speak to God this week, please ask Him to keep an eye on me.

Forgotten Memory

I'm transported back to the ave
Confused by the loss of years I had
When you sat on the roof to roll a j
And I would watch you smoke my life away
The thanks you gave in speech, but not in heart
How you stopped my words before I could start
The shade I felt I could not wear
The blame I believed was mine to bear
My voice was broken, though I talked much
I hadn't realised I was your crutch
The growing insecurities I gained
Transferred from how you were ashamed
Always shotgun, oh the irony
When all the bullets shot through me
The more I loved the more I died
With no concept of who I was inside
To stretch my arms I needed space
You needed something in my place
And twisted my thoughts back to me
So I resigned to not be free
Until your own cage got too small
I tried to make you ten feet tall
I had stagnated to help you grow
But you had more you had to know
At first it was painful to breathe
Confused like an animal that has been freed
The open air and space to run
To grow and feel without friction
Then I was happy without ties
But some of them remained inside
The lesson not completely learned
I still light up candles and get burned
I love too hard and am too soft
Mislead by being held aloft
The air is much too thin up here
One gets too giddy to see clear
I've fallen down, I'm back some years
Reliving the same old hopes and fears
But now these ties I will undo
And untie the memory of you
I'll write this off as a mistake
We both have insights we can take
I hope you'll love her like you should
And what she needs is understood
I'll carry on with what I know
With time to hope and room to grow

And...here we go!

1. If we had no winter then Spring wouldn't be quite so beautiful, would it?

2. The density of some people leaves me in a perpetual astonishment.

3. If I had my life to live over I would have to make so many changes, I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

4. It is incredible just how much time I can waste inside of four and twenty hours.

5. If you've never been thrilled then listen to Thriller.

6. To be interested in the changing seasons you have to be interested in change.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to getting in my pyjamas, tomorrow my plans include singing at Wimbledon, going for a walk in Richmond Park if the weather is nice and having lunch with some dear old friends and Sunday, I want to finally start that embroidery project, now I've sorted out all the threads!

Love Is A Verb

I've never thought of myself as someone who had barriers built up around her. I've experienced my share of heartache, but it hasn't stopped me from being open enough to get to know someone new, or to love them without holding back. However, although I will allow myself to fall in love, recently it occurred to me that perhaps I am slowly preventing letting someone love me back completely. It's not a conscious decision. It's not even something I would actively want. So what am I doing and why? My relationship experiences over the past few years have greatly affected me. I think for a long time I was extremely naïve and didn't really have any protective reflexes to speak of. But any 'guard' I did have, I let down so far that it bordered on doormat status. It took me years to wise up and realise that I deserved better, even though that wising up only came when the person I thought I deserved better than ended it with me.

The next person I met that made a huge emotional impact on me was so different to the last, much more content, more independent and secure, who seemingly felt the same about me to a degree. The warning signs that I completely ignored and perhaps couldn't even identify last time were not there and I went head-long into it, never one to hold back much in matters of the heart. Without wanting to sound horrendously cheesy, we had a one of those connections that doesn't happen that often in life. It was such a relief to feel that the person just 'got' me. It was wonderful that we were on the same wavelength, that our senses of humour were so close together, that we had a similar outlook on lots of things. But very gradually, little by little, it seemed that a familiar pattern was repeating.

In general, women require different things than men do to feel loved and needed and valued in a relationship. Further to that, individual women have different preferences for how these needs are met. Some people may be content with just being told they are loved and valued. I, for all my faults, need to hear it and see it, with action. That means little acts of thoughtfulness, that aren't done out of duty or for reward, but simply out of love. This might sound completely obvious, but it's something that I've found seems completely incomprehensible or just plain unreasonable to some guys. "But I tell you I love you everyday." "But what to you mean I don't do stuff for you? I pick you up and drop you home all the time." (No, I'm not making this up.) "I'm sorry I didn't call you at the weekend. I was busy." I might have high expectations of the person I'm with, but the main reason is because I put them first and therefore think I should be able to expect a reasonable level of consideration in return. I'm worth that. The problem is that years of being told otherwise (through actions - or should I say inaction - rather than verbally) has made me start to question if I am worth it.

If someone tells you that they love you more than anything, that you are the most amazing person they have met, that you are very important to them and that they want to spend their life with you, then I think they should be able to back that up by doing more than just saying it. If someone can say all of these things to me, but can't find time to put me first occasionally, to make quality time for me, to make an effort to do something special for me on important occasions (I am talking a card at the very least at this point, I'm not unreasonable), then to me, all the things they've said are sort of meaningless. I might be wrong in my thinking, but when I love someone, I don't just tell them. I show them. I do things for them. I try to be considerate and think of ways to make their life easier. It's important to me to be a great girlfriend. I am a great girlfriend. Lol! I take pride in that and want a guy who feels the same, who takes pride in his boyfriend skills and deems it important to make me happy, the same way I want to make him happy. All of this may sound like I am asking for a lot, or that I am demanding or unreasonable, but like I said, I'm not asking for any old Joe to do all this for me. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask such things of a person who has already pledged to do whatever it takes to be with me. If you can make grand statements like that, but can't get it together to buy me a gift for my birthday (or at very least remember it), then you should just refrain from making the statements in the first place. Am I wrong?

I don't give to get, but when you make continual effort and consistently don't receive the same level of effort in return, it wears you down. I don't want to start being a selfish person, or one who isn't very thoughtful, or one who looks out for herself first and leaves others as an afterthought. Mainly because that's not really me. It goes against who I am, or the person I want to be. It's a shame that often in life, our better qualities end up being stamped out of us as a result of bad experiences. I don't want to be less giving just because the people that I previously gave to didn't appreciate what I had to give. But I've found that although I've not completely built up barriers that stop me from loving another person, I've started building ones that want to prevent anyone from loving me. I don't want another person to fall for me and tell me all the things they want to do for me, but not do them. I don't want another person to tell me how much they love me but never get around to showing me. I have realised that I am scared of anyone else falling in love with me, but failing me in love. I would love to have a relationship eventually, but right now, the idea of being led to believe the talk, but being disappointed all over again with the action, is just too painful.

The Week in Review #17

This week started off well. It had to, really, since it was the May Day bank holiday weekend. Nothing starts off a week better than not having to go to work on the Monday. Lisacles was coming over to stay on Sunday and Monday nights, so it was a mad dash on Sunday morning for me to get my place in order, unless I wanted her to sleep on the pile of dirty clothes that was occupying my bedroom floor. After making more floor space than I had seen in a long while, vacuuming and dusting and just generally getting rid of stuff that was taking up unnecessary space, I even had time to have a nice long soak in a hot bath before I had to meet her at the station. After yapping pretty much non-stop for about 3 hours, we realised we would have to actually leave the house if we wanted to catch X-Men Origins (or 'Wolveriney' as I like to call it). As we left for the bus-stop, we reached the main road to see the bus go speeding past us. Great. We managed to get the next one, which then randomly decided to change destinations and not go as far as we needed it to. Another bus passed us half-way there and we managed to jump off at a bus-stop and leg it on to the one ahead. Feeling rather smug that we made it, the feeling soon faded as the driver from the one behind followed us and asked the other driver to wait while some passengers transferred. We ran for nothing. I don't appreciate unnecessary self-exertion. During the rest of the journey, we were amused/disturbed by a fly on the windowsill next to us breaking out what appeared to be Capoeira moves. I should clarify. I was amused, and sort of impressed. Lisa was disturbed. But then, she was the one sitting closest to it. After what felt like ages, we arrived at the cinema to find the most confusing queuing system ever - "Join any queue, you can buy tickets at any till!" - which meant there were people waiting to buy popcorn behind people who didn't even have tickets for the film yet. We eventually got to speak to someone at the bar, who told us there were no tickets left for Wolverine, but would we like a beer or a selection of hot beverages? OK, he didn't say that last bit, but they were for sale. The next showing wasn't for 2 and a half hours. We ended up going to Starbucks for a quick hot beverage and then heading home, me feeling absolutely ravenous after not really eating all day. Once home, we yapped some more, watched some CSI:NY series 4, cracked up at a Korean guy doing karaoke on YouTube and then ordered some Chinese food.

Day 2, we try again. Deciding we'd go for the earliest showing, which was lunchtime, I booked the tickets in advance this time, to guarantee we wouldn't make the trip for nothing. I made a mental note of the booking reference and then we left for the bus-stop. As we reached the main road, we again saw the bus speeding past us. I can't make this up. We stop at the shop for sustenance and then walk down to the next stop, eating crisps and Oreos and lamenting our utter bad luck. We finally get to the cinema, get to the pre-booked ticket machines and I realise I have left my cards at home. What on earth?! Someone is just dead-set against us seeing this film. I go to the bar and speak to a guy and remember with relish that I committed the booking reference to memory. Clever ol' me. The booking reference isn't recognised. I am on the verge of either crying, sitting down in a heap on the floor, or punching someone in the face. He searches my name and the tickets are found, which have the booking reference printed on them (the one I correctly recited, by the way). I resist the need for popcorn and we make it into the screen, in good time, before the adverts, without knocking over anyone's snacks or being unable to find our seats. Finally.

Nearly two hours of Hugh Jackman/Wolveriney goodness later, we are ready for food. We head to Strada, as Lisacles very cannily has a 2 for 1 voucher. I spend a while stuck between two choices for main course (one pasta, one pizza), and ponder what a 'white pizza' is. I know that phrase, but it doesn't click. I go for the pizza. A glass of the yummiest cranberry juice I have tasted later, I remember what it is. No tomato sauce. I had really been craving tomato sauce. My other pick was some pasta with a tomato-based sauce. I pick the only pizza on the menu that doesn't have tomato sauce and it didn't even occur to me to ask. This weekend gets better and better, lol. Lisa has some amazing chicken, which she graciously shares. In return, I offer her some of my sauceless pizza to mop up her mushroom sauce. It works out pretty well. We ponder whether to stay for dessert and then remember the rather tempting-looking cake shop a few doors down. We buy two very generous (and reasonably-priced!) slices of cheesecake to go and then head home. The cheesecake makes the evening and we eat it in between yapping and watching more CSI:NY. Thank goodness for having each other's company on Tuesday morning. I had been off work since Friday and Lisa since Thursday, so remembering we both had jobs we had to go back to was a strain. We actually got up on time, got ready at a nice leisurely pace and made, albeit begrudgingly, it to work.

I've previously mentioned my foray into swine flu prevention, which was amusing and somewhat pointless, but was an hour out of the office mid-afternoon, which was fine by me. The ladies I was helping out were very funny, one taking a mild-mannered approach ("Would you like a handwipe?") and the other being rather assertive in a hilarious manner ("May I give you a handwipe sir? No, it's not optional. It's because of the swine flu"). I got a bit flustered and nearly offered someone a "swine flu" instead of a "handwipe". The reactions we got were varied and funny. Some people reacted with disproportionate gratitude: "A handwipe? Oh wow, thanks. That's really thoughtful!" until a companion pointed out it this thoughtful 'gift' was probably due to swine flu. "Oh. Oh yeah." Others actively avoided us, or said rather forcefully, "I don't want one." Others just laughed at the thought that such a pathetic measure would be making the slightest bit of difference to a pandemic. Either way, it meant I wasn't in the office for an hour and that was fine by me.

In a lot of ways, it was a week of disappointments and sadness. I found out that the job I was hoping on was not meant to be, which I've accepted. I struggled with general feelings of discontent and unhappiness. I did a lot of thinking about my relationship and found that as much as it utterly pained me to realise and as much as I would feel unhappy making the decision, the way things were wasn't working for me. I am not proud of the way I conveyed this to the Boy, but I think part of the way the conversation went on my part was reactionary to how he responded. He didn't seem to understand, much less accept my point of view. He doesn't understand why chit-chatting on IM, but never having quality time together on the phone (I'm talking once a week, maybe even once a fortnight, I'm not asking for blood) and the fact I never hear from him at weekends and the fact that we still don't have a definite time for him coming over, among other things, all make this extremely difficult and just not enough for me. I have my share of insecurities as everyone does, but being in a long-distance relationship, where the other person just isn't available enough makes even the most insignificant insecurities worse. I don't really want to explain every detail here, but he just doesn't get it. All the things that would be necessary to improve our relationship enough for me to hang on till a visit, are all within his capabilities. I've cut him so much slack over the past two years. I compromised on what I would and wouldn't accept, just to make life easier and to make things work. But he said I was giving up on us. He seemed like he wanted to work things out rather than lose them altogether, but yet it seemed he wasn't willing to do anything that involved any inconvenience or sacrifice on his part. He has a number of explanations or excuses, but I think that if he really meant the things he said about what the relationship meant to him, he'd find a way round it. I've tried my best to. I can't keep doing that for the both of us. I am kind of devastated, to be honest. Yes, it was my decision, but I suppose deep down I had hoped that he would do whatever he could to change my mind.

Meanwhile, a friendship is blossoming with my blast from the past. We've exchanged a few messages, catching up on each other's lives, but mainly discussing the spiritual challenges we've faced and how to deal with them. It's refreshing having such open and brutally honest conversations about a subject that doesn't always get discussed in detail, at least not in my experience. He's challenged my thinking, showed me a different perspective on a few things and given me a bit of encouragement. I've really needed that this week. In addition to this, I also had a really interesting catch-up and discussion via MSN with one of my oldest (in terms of length of relationship, not age!) friends. Again, we spoke about a few things that don't often get readily discussed in a spiritual context. It was thought-provoking and encouraging and a long-time coming, since we don't catch up that often. We talked about the idea of being tempted to bail when things got difficult within our religious communities/worship groups and how it's a challenge to stay and be useful and work for God in situations that are utterly frustrating and seemingly impossible! At the same time, I was also having an MSN discussion with two church friends and have somehow agreed to be involved with helping to organise the worship services from July onwards. It was my very own mini Jonah experience, since I have been feeling really conflicted over whether to continue attending this group and to therefore get involved, or to just go elsewhere. I have found it very frustrating at times and have been reluctant to really commit to any responsibility after having a few negative experiences with the group. I was starting to come to the conclusion that it's not for me and that things were too difficult to change, but God seems to be telling me something. I've been trying to run away, but one way or another I think God is taking me to Nineveh. :oP

A word that sums up the week? Challenging. But I guess that's not a bad thing, by any means. The most important thing is that I'm trying to rise to the challenges and meet them face-on, instead of running away. I have the parachute on, but I'm not jumping out of the plane quite yet. How was your week? What challenges did you encounter on the road to the weekend? I hope that whatever problems you faced, you can know that you're not alone.

Friday Fill-In #33

And...here we go!

1. Apples are to oranges as I am to Paris Hilton. [I would like to clarify, that is in no way similar!!!]

2. "MONKEYPANTS!!!" and that's all I have to say about that.

3. I think I hear the ice-cream van coming. I'm getting my cash ready, make mine a double-99!

4. Too often, instead of sticking to my guns when I really should, I end up waving the white flag instead.

5. Do what you want to do, but don't feel you need to give me every single detail, really.

6. Ahead of him was the bully who had made fun of him and behind him was a Radio Flyer wagon; in the wagon was a bucket filled with custard, which would soon be all over the bully's head. [I've no idea why, ok, this one had me stuck.]

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to knowing the weekend is here and all ahead of me, tomorrow my plans include hearing my Mum give a talk at church about health and then maybe going to an afternoon baptism and Sunday, I want to possibly make a visit to the gym in the morning (my first in months - how likely is this really?), start my cross-stitch project (I'm only at the sorting out the thread stage so far) and continue with the 'eBay myself out of debt' plan of action, lol!

On Sneezes, Office Scandal and Spaghetti

Returning to work after the weekend at the best of times is not my favourite thing to do, so returning to work after a wonderfully lazy four-day weekend was a tad difficult to say the least. Thankfully, Lil' Miss Lisacles was there for half of my commute. We parted at the station, promising each other we'd send a email later in the day to try and distract from the mountain of work that had no doubt piled up over the days we were away.

My body has chosen the most inconvenient time to decide it is allergic to tree pollen/pollution/work. With everyone in full swine flu alert paranoia, it's not the best time to be displaying cold symptoms. I was sneezing all day, into tissues (or my hands when I wasn't quick enough off the draw), rather than into the crook of my elbow as we have amusingly been advised. I am feeling a little run down, but contrary to my dramatic nature, I am completely dismissing the idea that I have caught a pig's cold. Although I have never really suffered from hayfever to any significant degree, I am sure the pollen or the pollution must be getting to me. However, I have somehow been 'chosen as a volunteer' (can you really be a volunteer if you are chosen?) to man the doors at an awards ceremony at work tomorrow, giving out hand wipes at the door to every single person who enters, in some sort of attempt at preventing contamination. I'm sure an allergic, sneezing scruff like me, handing you a wet wipe as you enter an enclosed space with potentially 3,000 other attendees (many of whom will be from overseas), will more than reassure you that we have this pandemic contained. I've been mistaken for being Hispanic/Latina on more than one occasion, but never specifically Mexican. Maybe I'll be generous with the bronzer tomorrow and go for a full house on the 'ways to create slight unease and encourage impending panic.'

Meanwhile, ill-advised health & safety details aside, work just gets better and better. Despite Miss T's pleas for our only male team member to dance naked on the table because she was utterly bored, we remained without entertainment or excitement for most of the day. "It's rubbish here, nothing interesting ever happens!" she lamented, mid-afternoon. Barely an hour later, there were whispers and hushed voices and furtive looks and we discovered that a couple of days before, our bigwig had unexpectedly left the building! It all seems very suspicious, especially since I am pretty sure that positions at that level require at least 3 months' notice. Miss T was almost salivating with excitement. Did they jump, or were they pushed? The politics is a little intriguing, but all I really care about is how it affects our team, our morale and general working environment. Feeling that now was as good a time as any to chase up the position in another department that I had applied for, I contacted someone in HR. Who responded by just forwarding my email to one of the interview panel. How very professional. I finally found out, a whole month after my interview, that they have just offered the position to another candidate. I was assured that I had been a close second, but since it was for internal applicants only and with no way of knowing how many people even applied, I may as well have come fourth in a race of hundreds at the Olympics. Who cares about the number of contenders when you're out of the medals?

Trying not to feel hugely disappointed and bitter (twitch, twitch, lol), I am now without a plan B or escape route from a place that is becoming increasingly precarious and stressful. There are rumours of a third departmental restructure. I am consoling myself with the knowledge that I had prayed about this situation and there were others praying for me also. So I conclude that this position or the timing is not God's will and that there is a reason for the way things have worked out. Feeling less and less enthused about work, I was thrilled by the suggestion I meet Lisacles after work for a quick beverage. Even though we had spent the weekend together, one day of work was enough to provide an evening's conversation fodder. A quick beverage morphed into dinner by the time we met and our grumbling bellies led the way to our little Italian place for some pasta. Being perked up by the fact that the meatballs on the menu were beef and not pork (meaning I could actually eat them), we both ordered spaghetti and meatballs with tomato and chilli sauce. My sneezes abated enough for me to eat my dinner and we were looked after by pleasantly friendly waiters, but left alone enough to eat in relative peace while we let off steam about our respective days.

It's amazing what good company and good food can do. *sneezes*

FYI: pic update

I added the pics of my Mum's birthday cake to The Week In Review #15, a little late I know. But for the sneakiest taste of birthday cake ever, check the pics here.

Spoilt For Choice

Friday Fill-Ins this week, prompted the question of which was my favourite Spring flower. I love magnolias, but I am totally spoilt for choice really, because my Mum's garden is overflowing with a rainbow of colours at the moment. In particular, it boasts an abundance of tulips. I get to see this lovely view once a week. Lucky ol' me. But I do like to share. :o)

The Week in Review #16

Knowing I had only four days to work this week probably made the week at work a little easier! I had the day off today and had some errands to run. Luckily (or unluckily), it was a lovely 21°C and beautifully sunny, so I was out and about with my sunnies on. On the bad side, I had forgotten how warm weather and rushing around doing stuff is not a good combination. I get a sweaty brow when I'm hot and bothered...isn't that a nice image for ya?? :o)

I've blogged a little bit more than usual this week, so this week's review will probably (I say probably - I do like a good tangent!) be less essay-esque than usual! Apologies if I repeat myself.

So, the week that has brought us to the fine old month of May! Here goes:
  • I still haven't heard about that internal position I applied for. I am hoping this just means that HR are crappy and slow and disorganised and not that I was pitiful at interview (granted, it's a possibility). However, either way, you'd think they would have at least informed me of the outcome by now. I am just going to forget it happened and then any good news would be a nice surprise. Just forget I even mentioned it, ok? :o)

  • Work was actually ok. Quite busy, but sort of quiet. Miss T, true to form after a weekend away at the seaside, brought us back a stick of rock each. Mini-Me was back to work and that was a relief. We've had a slight lull in activity in some ways, so in response to her asking "What do you want me to do?" a few times a day, I had to give her a little word on inefficiency. Lol! Just what you want from your colleagues (!) Our lovely management seem to want to make cuts where they can, so I don't want to risk losing her because they think she has nothing to do!

  • Me and the Boy had an argument. Yay! Just what I always wanted (!) Things have been difficult lately and I haven't been enjoying the lack of contact. I realised this has been building up a while and I think I gave him a bit of a shock with the mini tirade I came out with. He responded with some strong words himself, that I wasn't too happy about. No-one likes to have their flaws pointed out to them. We are not talking for a while. I'm unwilling to back down right now, mainly because I think I had very just cause for my irritations and because I think his response to it and reasoning was pretty poor. I don't think he realises how much this has got to me. I get the impression he thinks I am being irrational and will come to my senses once this blows over, when I am actually questioning whether we are really going to work and whether the end of our road is nigh. *Sigh* Ooh, unintentional rhyme! Thank goodness for humour. It's laugh or cry at the moment.

  • The eBay obsession continues, with a lovely purple dress arriving for me today and a nice wetsuit-material soft case for my laptop. The little things are all-important right now.

  • I've done a little bit of soul-searching this week, as I suppose I always do. I'm a definite work-in-progress (hence my blog title) and the past two years have made me painfully aware of my weaknesses, insecurities and mistakes. While trying to improve and work on some of those things, I'm trying not to dwell on the past, but it can be tough at times coming to terms with the things I've done wrong or the parts of the person I've become that I'm unhappy about. I think I realised most that the best person to make things better for is yourself. Being told you need to change X, Y and Z isn't always easy to hear, even when you are already well aware of those things. But changing those things because you want the approval or love of the person who pointed them out, isn't necessarily the best motivation. The things I need to change, I am going to change for me. Anyone who claims to love me and be there for me, but is only interested in the 'final' product and isn't willing to stick out the journey with me, well, I can pretty much do without them. It's a blessing to have even one or two people who think I rock, regardless.
I said I'd keep this brief and once again I have proved not to be a woman of my word! Lol! Brevity is not really one of my strong points. I'm looking forward to the weekend, because it's a three-day one for us Brits. Hopefully the weather is going to hold out for the next few days, as Lolly is coming to stay and we have fun and games planned. We do have a plan B already laid out, though. If the weather is pants, we stay in PJs and have a DVD-fest! It's always a winner. :o)

May is here and that's always good news for me (the month of my birth and the host of two lovely bank holiday weekends, bookending the month). I hope your week was full of new experiences and lots of laughter. Even if it wasn't, there's always another one, just around the corner...

Friday Fill-In #32

And...here we go!

1. The first rule of working in an office and getting along is not messing around with your workmates' office equipment.

2. I've decided/been told/realised it's best to speak my mind, not be all shut up the way clams are.

3. When I think of carnivals I think of little people. Is that wrong?

4. You must already know that Magnolias are my favorite spring flower, followed closely by tulips and pretty much everything else. I'm spoiled for choice with my Mum's garden (I'm going to post pics in a separate post - here).

5. Things on my desk (at home) include a porcelain clog, Starflower oil capsules, mini baubles I have been meaning to put back in my Christmas box and an electric toothbrush. Don't ask! :o)

6. You being so blindly convinced that you're right makes me wanna prove you so, so WRONG.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to being with the fam, tomorrow my plans include getting some spiritual rest and enjoying the nice weather and Sunday, I want to await the arrival of Lolly Lil/Lisacles and possibly go to see Mr. Jackman in all his Wolveriney fineness at the flicks!
