How Deep The Father's Love For Us

The lyrics of this modern hymn by Stuart Townend have really hit home for me today. It has been a tough week and these words broke down the barriers I had built up around my heart and mind in an attempt to survive on my own. My Bible study this week centred on the fact that God revealed his plan of salvation from the very moment sin entered the world. There was always provision to save us, this fallen human race of ours. That provision was in the shape of our Father's beloved Son, who created us. The central Scriptural reference was Isaiah 53, which "presents Christ as the Lamb of God. Those who are lifted up with pride, whose souls are filled with vanity, should look upon this picture of their Redeemer, and humble themselves in the dust. The entire chapter should be committed to memory. Its influence will subdue and humble the soul defiled by sin and uplifted by self-exaltation."1 None of us deserve what God has done for us, but yet He still did it. I am truly humbled. Thank you, Lord.

How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss -
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life -
I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart -
His wounds have paid my ransom.

Stuart Townend.
