I got on the tube this evening to make my way to see the 'rents. I had to change trains at a particular station and had to jump off one train to get on another, just across the platform. I was fairly sure I had got on the correct train, but because I was trying out a different route I haven't taken before, I thought I should listen out for the driver's announcement, just to make sure.
"Hello ladies and gentlemen," the driver said over the tannoy, "this is a District line train to Wimbldeon!" There seemed to be a little too much excitement in his voice as he announced the destination, but since it was the destination I wanted, that was all I needed to know. I was about to put my earphones back in, when he continued, "I have some information that I wanted to share; you can pass it on to other people if you want." I carried on listening, already sighing in anticipation of delays or problems down the line. "I've just found out that my daughter and son-in-law are going to have a baby: I'm going to be a grandfather! I just needed to tell someone. You'll do. OK, bye."
I couldn't help it, I chuckled out loud. I noticed other passengers smiling at the news. When I got off the train at Wimbledon, which was the end of the line, the driver was getting out of the cab. I was too far away, but another passenger walked over and said a hearty "Congratulations!" The driver replied with thanks, visibly beaming with pride. There are times like this when I love being a part of the human family. :o)
